COVID-19's Impact on College Students

As we transition into the 2021 school year, there has intense debate over how colleges and universities should handle the COVID-19 pandemic. While there was a high number of cases among college students in 2020, increasing numbers of vaccinated individuals and natural immunity has helped reduce the transmission of the virus. As of August 2021, the case fatality rate of individuals age 19 to 29 is 0.0%. Statistically, more college students will die of drug and alcohol overdose this year than from the Coronavirus. Because it is proven that COVID-19 has little to no impact on college students, wearing a mask should be optional to all students at UW schools.
